Royal Exhibition Hall at Carlton Gardens

The Royal Exhibition Hall at Carlton Gardens

In the last week I’ve been here, the 8-degree mornings have seen countless failed attempts at 7am runs. Waking up to freezing weather has been anything but ideal for my training schedule because it’s just been too cold to step out of my bloomingly heated room.

But for a first step, I have signed up for the Melbourne Marathon with my cousin Steelwool and JM, and now the latest news is that Nakspud + friends will be flying down to run the half as well! That’s as much motivation as one would need to train, though I’m cheating a little and taking it easy with the 10km race since 7 weeks is a little too short to train for the half. After all, there’s always next year!

I’ve found a perfect 5km running route near my apartment – on Thursday afternoon, I ran from my apartment to the beautiful, lush Carlton Gardens, looped it twice and ran back home, clocking in 4.95km in total. It’s such a pity that the park couldn’t be any bigger but I have a feeling that if I ran up all the way to Princes Park, I might be able to clock in a 10km-er. Somehow, as beautiful as the park grounds are over here, I still find myself yearning for the familiarity of the East Coast Park back home. That long, meandering, never-ending stretch of road that requires virtually no navigation…I like that.

Meanwhile, it’s 9.30am on a Saturday morning and I’m wondering if I should go for a run…or get my bike fixed…or go for a swim. Hmm, but it’s too cold.
